From Maths Challenges to Maths Hats: Celebrating Maths Week at St Joseph’s BNS!

Oct 16th, 2026

St Joseph’s BNS celebrated Maths Week with an exciting programme of mathematical challenges, interactive games and hands-on activities. Throughout the week, pupils explored how mathematics connects to everyday life through engaging, practical and collaborative learning experiences. Activities encouraged mathematical thinking, reasoning, problem-solving and creativity, while giving every pupil an opportunity to participate, challenge themselves and experience success.

A special highlight was the creation of dedicated Maths for Fun Activites. Each class participated in a range of hands-on activities using concrete materials, mathematical games and practical challenges. These interactive activities encouraged pupils to investigate, experiment, collaborate and discover mathematical concepts in an enjoyable and meaningful way.

The programme also featured our Maths Problems Competition, where pupils tackled a range of age-appropriate mathematical challenges. The competition encouraged pupils to apply their knowledge, use logical reasoning and persevere when faced with a problem. Prizes were awarded to the winners in recognition of their efforts and achievements.

Pupils also took part in exciting Maths Trails, exploring the school environment through fun, practical challenges involving shapes, patterns, measurement and problem-solving, bringing maths to life beyond the classroom.

To bring mathematics home, pupils were invited to participate in a Make Your Own Maths Hat Challenge as a homework activity. With the support and involvement of their parents and families, pupils designed and created imaginative hats inspired by numbers, shapes, patterns and other mathematical concepts. This provided a wonderful opportunity to connect home and school learning while celebrating pupils’ artistic talents and creativity.

The week concluded on Friday with a fantastic Maths Hat Fashion Show, where pupils proudly modelled their creations and shared their mathematical designs with their classmates. The event showcased the children’s imagination, individuality and enthusiasm, demonstrating that mathematics can be both educational and fun.

Our Maths Week celebrations reflected the spirit of the Primary Mathematics Curriculum, placing pupils at the centre of their learning and promoting active participation, mathematical proficiency and positive attitudes towards mathematics.

A huge well done to all our pupils and a sincere thank you to our teachers, SNAs and families for supporting such an inclusive, engaging and enjoyable week of mathematical learning at St Joseph’s BNS!
